SMSD GRADUATES RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS

(July 12, 2007)  Jason Xu and Nicole Quindara, Stafford High School 2007 graduates, were named scholarship recipients by the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation (TILF), a service of the University Interscholastic League (UIL).

The foundation, which announced the scholarship awards in June, received 715 applications and awarded 291 new and 232 renewed scholarships.  "The selection process is a difficult one for our board members and donors as there are so many outstanding students," said TILF's Brenda Baxendale.

TILF was founded in 1954 to provide scholarships to the academically talented.  Since 1954, more than 15,000 Texas high school students have been awarded over $21 million through the foundation.  To qualify, applicants have to have competed in UIL Academic State Meets.  During the 2006-07 school year, TILF disbursed $1,181,575 to 623 students attending 62 colleges and universities in Texas.  The foundation has over $7 million in endowed funds and receives direct scholarship grants each year of more than $800,000 from foundations, individuals, and corporate sponsors.

Xu will be awarded the Houston Endowment Scholarship  his freshman year at Rice University where he will major in engineering.

Quindara will attend The University of Texas at Austin and the Arturo V. and Elvira D. Lozano Scholarship will be distributed over four years.

Both students competed at UIL Academic State for the last four years in Spelling and Vocabulary.  "They have done exceptionally well," said Baxendale, "and we're very proud of the caliber of students who come through this program."  Stafford High School's UIL Academic teams and individuals compete under the leadership of sponsor Stacey Gridley who encourages student participation in UIL Academics at the elementary and middle school levels.
